MATANUSKA RIVER PARK - CAMPGROUND
(Palmer) Mile 17 Old Glenn Highway. Eighty-six (86) spaces for tents or RV's (20 caravan sites), central comfort station featuring flush toilets and hot showers, RV dump station, picnic tables, grills, four (4) park pavilions, playground equipment, horseshoe pit, a sand volleyball court, trails and river access, observation deck, parking areas, campfire area, firewood, and group camping area. $10.00 camping fee (2 tent/2 vehicle limit per site) $15.00 per vehicle w/hookups. Park opens by Memorial Day weekend and closes at freeze-up in the fall.
LAZY MOUNTAIN RECREATION AREA
(Lazy Mountain) turn onto Clark-Wolverine Road at mile 15.9 Old Glenn Highway; proceed to intersection, turn right on Huntley Road, proceed to Recreation Area at end of road. The area offers views of the Knik and Matanuska River watersheds, Cook Inlet, Pioneer Peak and various Buttes. Facilities include toilet, paved parking lot, horse and hiking trails. NOTE: A nearby spring is NOT approved for public consumption. The recreation area is best known for its trail that traverses from the parking area to the summit of Lazy Mountain. (non-motorized)
VOLUNTEER PARK
Located adjacent to the Cottonwood Public Safety Building at the intersection of Seward Meridian Parkway and the Palmer-Wasilla Highway. The landscaped day use park offers a pavilion, picnic tables, grills, and sand volleyball and horseshoe courts for informal family or group use. No restrooms are available. Contact MSB at 745-9578 for information on reserving a pavilion.
FISH CREEK PARK
(Big Lake) South Big Lake Road at Fish Creek. The 3-acre day use area provides access to Fish Creek. Organized facilities include a salmon observation deck (species prevalent during August), pavilion, tables, picnic area, restroom, fitness court, parking, playground and open lawn area. Contact MSB at 745-9578 for information on reserving a pavilion.

DESHKA RIVER - CAMPGROUND & PRIMITIVE CAMPS

The land owned by the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the State of Alaska which is adjacent to the Deshka River from the mouth up river to river mile (RM) 11 is managed by the MSB Community Development Department.
The following are descriptions of the three types of permits available for those wishing to camp along the first eleven miles of the Deshka River this summer:
Campground
(Willow area - Access by boat of plane only) The campsites are available on a first-come first serve basis for non-commercial use only. There are 21 campsites and 2 ADA campsites each with a picnic table and fire ring. There are public porta-can toilet facilities and boat storage areas. Register for a campsite at the self-registration station.
Rates for campground use are $8.00 daily, $50.00 weekly with a maximum stay of 1 week and 6 people per camp. Open mid May to mid August.
Primitive Camp Permits
Areas along the river that are not part of the campground, or reserved for seasonal permit holders, are open for "primitive" camping. Campers may register and purchase a permit at the self-registration station located in the campground. Permits for primitive camping allow personal use of borough or state owned land, within the eleven mile corridor, on a daily or weekly basis. Those who plan on floating the river and expect to camp between RM 0 and 11. You can pre-register by phone, mail, or in person at the borough offices in Palmer.
The fee for primitive camping is $5.00 daily, $30.00 weekly, with a maximum stay of 2 weeks and 6 people per camp.
Seasonal Land Use Permits
Seasonal land use permits are available to noncommercial and commercial users. Those wishing to set up a camp for the summer season may make an application to do so at the borough building in Palmer. Applications will be processed on first-come first-serve basis starting April 1st. Seasonal land use permits allow you the use of a designated site four months (May - September). The permit fee is $500.00, with an additional surcharge for commercial users. Commercial users are also required to provide insurance and copies of business licenses.
CHRISTIANSEN LAKE PARK
Christiansen Lake Park is a small day-use park located on the west side of Christiansen Lake, east of the community of Talkeetna. There are several picnic sites, a swimming beach, three pavilions and a boat launch for small car top boats or canoes. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day).

TALKEETNA RIVER PARK - CAMPGROUND
(Talkeetna) Located at the end of Main Street in downtown Talkeetna. This is a wooded area close to the river, with twelve (12) tent camping sites with picnic tables and fire rings. Close to many recreational amenities located downtown such as trails, river trips, fishing, train station, gift shops, and restaurants. $10.00 camping fee per site (6 people per site - 2 tent limit with a maximum stay of two weeks) no RVs allowed. Park opens by Memorial Day weekend and closes at freeze-up in the fall. A scheduled upgrade for the 2005 season is flush toilets.
