MSB DEM imageIn the simplest of terms, GIS refers to computerized mapping. But in reality, the term "GIS" encompasses much more than that. GIS is an acronym for Geographic Information System. GIS is a computerized technology which merges graphical information with database information. The result is a powerful tool that allows the user to graphically display, query, and analyze data.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough has utilized GIS and computer-aided drafting technology since the mid-1980s. GIS technology helps Borough administrators make better-informed decisions and Borough staff to operate more efficiently.

The GIS Division provides mapping services for other Borough departments and the Borough Assembly. It also assigns physical site addresses within unincorporated areas of the Borough and the City of Houston. Some of the map sets maintained by the GIS Division include the tax parcel maps, voting precinct maps, and map sets for the 911 Dispatch Center in Palmer.

For additional general information about GIS, the Borough recommends that you view the Wikipedia GIS web page or the GIS.COM web page at http://www.gis.com. There, you will find plenty of information about GIS, with examples of how a wide variety of people use it.
