The Central MAT-SU Fire Department (CMSFD) is also known as MAT-SU Borough Emergency Services District One. CMSFD is the second largest and second busiest fire department in Alaska, after Anchorage. The department operates a combination system of full-time staff, supplemented with paid-on-call responders. There are three sections within the department, EMS, fire, and rescue; each with its own funding, membership requirements, and equipment. The department currently has over 125 members which includes 12 full-time staff, 4 explorers, and 7 auxiliary volunteers.

EMS: Emergency Medical Services are provided by the Central MAT-SU EMS.

Fire: Fire protection services are provided to the Wasilla-Lakes Fire Service Area through seven (7) fire station/public safety buildings. The Wasilla-Lakes Fire Service Area includes the Trunk Road corridor and lands west including the entire City of Wasilla, plus the entire Knik Goose Bay Road area and up to mile six (6) of Point MacKenzie Road.

Central MAT-SU Fire Department and Wasilla-Lakes FSA Overview

The Wasilla Fire Service Area No. 1 and Lakes Fire Service Area No. 22 operationally merged in 1986 to form the Central MAT-SU Fire Department.  We legally consolidated in 1991 to form the Wasilla-Lakes Fire Service Area No. 130.

The Central MAT-SU Fire Department provides fire protection for approximately 150 square miles, which is identified as the Wasilla-Lakes Fire Service Area Number 130.  The area primarily encompasses the core area of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough starting on the east at the intersection of the Parks and Glenn Highway, west on the Parks Highway to Vine Road, north to Mile 7 Wasilla-Fishhook Road and south to Mile 6 Point MacKenzie Road.  We protect the entire City of Wasilla.  The population of the service area is approximately 35,000, which is approximately 51% of the total population of the borough.  The Central MAT-SU Fire Department operates from seven (7) fire stations and each station has assigned officers.
