Storms and Floods

altSevere rain storms can cause landslides or flooding. Avoid lower elevation streets, creek beds, flooded roads, drainage channels, and other areas that may flood. Learn if your home is in a Flood Zone or accessed by crossing a flood zone.

  • Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you must walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
  • Do not drive into flooded areas. Foods can erode under the pavement causing sinkholes which may swallow your vehicle with you in it.
  • If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle can be quickly swept away.
  • Stay clear of water that is in contact with downed power lines.
  • Do not allow children to play around high water, storm drains or any flooded areas.
  • If flooding is likely, and time permits, move valuable household possessions to the upper floors of your home.
  • If water has entered a garage or basement, do not walk through it.
  • Winter freeze/thaw and spring “break-up” can cause occasional local flooding near stream banks and low lying areas. This may occur in areas not which have not previously experienced much flooding. Be aware of your location and situation and be prepared.
  • If you are asked to leave your property, shut off electric circuits. If advised by your local utility, shut off gas service as well. (See Utilities).
  • When camping or traveling in remote areas, know where you are going and be prepared for flooding and/or to be cut off during a flood event.
