Mat-Su Local Emergency Planning Committee
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough's Local Emergency Planning Committee ( LEPC), is a voluntary organization which was established in an Emergency Planning District designated by the Alaska State Emergency Response Commission (SERC).
Both SERC and LEPCs were created to meet the requirements of the Federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act, also known as the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) Title III for emergency response planning.
As a very important aspect of its mandate, the Mat-Su LEPC is required to receive the annual Tier II (Chemical Inventory) Reports from local industries and businesses. The LEPC uses this information to perform hazard assessments and planning for Borough communities. The information from these reports is available to the public upon request.
Due to the prevalence of natural and weather related disasters in Alaska, the Mat-Su LEPC has enhanced its emergency planning to include an "all hazards" focus.
LEPC Staffing:
The LEPC’s chairperson and other officers are elected by and from the predominantly volunteer membership. Membership is comprised of a cross section of business representatives, planners, emergency responders, health care providers, elected officials, media representatives, and concerned citizens... all appointed to the LEPC by the Borough Assembly and Mayor, to serve on behalf of their communities. Most LEPC staff functions are performed by borough Public Safety Department personnel.
Meetings:
LEPC meetings are open to the public, and advertised in the local media. We welcome your participation! The meetings are usually held on the third Wednesday of each month. Check out the Meeting Schedule.
