May 6, 2011 - LiDAR and Imagery Project Update

Additional Funding
On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Borough Assembly accepted and appropriated additional funding from the Alaska Energy Authority to cover the acquisition and QA/QC work for an additional 180 acres of coverage along the Susitna river.

As mentioned previously, the QA/QC work has been split into two pieces:

  • Check Point Survey - a bid solicitation for a professional survey of 100 ground control points (20 per the 5 most dominant land cover categories) for use in assessing the vertical accuracy of the LiDAR data and derived products.
  • QA/QC Assessment - a contract to perform the 3rd party QA/QC evaluation.

The check point survey was put out for bid on April 20th and closed yesterday. We are in the process of gathering additional information from the potential vendor and we should have additional details to share by next week.

Current Conditions
We still have ice on most of the lakes here in the core area (Wasilla to Palmer) and there is still quite a bit of snow and ice on portions of the Matanuska River braid plain. Some of the smaller lakes in the core area are half open and I’ve heard reports that Lucille Lake is nearly open. We’re hopeful that conditions in the southern portions of the acquisition area will be coming online sometime within the next week. MSB is maintaining close contact with Aerometric and we plan on sending out an e-mail when we get the news that the first flight has gone up.
Keep your fingers crossed for clear skies.

Field Work
Several of our partners are planning to collect field data concurrent to the LiDAR acquisition period. Three areas of interest have been identified, two along the Susitna River and one along the Matanuska. A process has been established for Aerometric to notify the MSB when acquisition will occur for each of the three areas.
