The Process
The Permit Center has provided the following checklist and instruction guideline to make the driveway permitting process as efficient as possible. If you have questions after reading this, please contact our office.
Use the checklist below to ensure all documents are in order and all arrangements have been made before submitting your application:
- Complete the Driveway Permit Application (pages 1 thru 5)
- Attach sketch or site plan showing location of all existing driveways and any new proposed driveway
- Have cash or check made payable to Matanuska-Susitna Borough or MSB
- Flag physical driveway location on property
- Provide a copy or copies of completed application for appropriate department(s)
- Verify the proposed driveway will access a Borough right-of-way
REVIEW
Once an application is submitted, it is reviewed for completeness and entered into our database. Next, the application is given to our driveway inspector who reviews the submitted information for accuracy and to ensure it is compliant with applicable Borough standards.
INITIAL INSPECTION
If it is a proposed driveway the inspector will perform a site visit to verify that no construction has begun. If it is an existing driveway, the inspector will verify the driveway is compliant with applicable Borough standards. The inspector will look at site specific conditions, such as: proposed location feasibility, adequate sight distance, culvert/drainage needs, etc.
AUTHORIZATION TO CONSTRUCT
Once the initial inspection is complete, The Permit Center will send the applicant a letter stating the driveway is “authorized for construction” along with a permit number.
This does not mean that the driveway is now permitted, only that the driveway may be built to applicable Borough standards. Please make note of any comments that the inspector has written in the comment field. The applicant has one year to construct the driveway from the date of the authorization letter, otherwise, the application is voided and the applicant must reapply.
If the driveway is not authorized, the Permit Center will send the applicant notification.
FINAL INSPECTION
Once the driveway has been constructed, the applicant must call the Inspection Call-In Line at 745-9806 to schedule a final inspection. Use the permit number on the application for reference when calling and provide information requested on the call-in line.
The inspector will perform another site visit to verify the driveway has been constructed in accordance with the requirements on the Driveway Permit and applicable Borough standards.
APPROVED PERMIT
Once driveway construction has been completed, inspected, and approved, the driveway permit applicant is sent a copy of the original application, signed by an authorized Borough representative.
