Driving Directions to Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass

Nordic, Future Apline, Hiking, Sledding, and other places in area:


FROM WASILLA:

Travel north on Wasilla-Fishhook Road until mile 11- turn left (north) on Palmer-Fishhook Road until you get to mile 7.1.

From here if you want to go to the Southern Area where the Nordic and general hiking trails are located - turn left (west) on Edgerton Parks Road. Travel 1 mile until you get to the access road that is not built yet (Ullr's Trail) and turn right (north). Drive one mile to the parking area. NOTE: The new road, Ullr's Trail, is not yet built. Construction is expected to begin in March 2012.

From mile 7.1 if you want to go to the Northern area where the sledding hill is located and where the Alpine ski area will be – continue north on Palmer Fishhook Road (from this point on the road is commonly referred to as Hatcher Pass Road) until you get to mile 11 – where you will make a 45 degree left turn and proceed up the access road to the parking area (1/8 mile) for the sledding hill.

Keep heading north on Hatcher Pass Road if you want to go to other places in Hatcher Pass such as: Gold Mint (Mile 14), Archangel Valley (Mile 14.9), Fishhook (Mile 16.7) or Independence Mine (Mile 17.5). ). During the summer you can turn left at Mile 17.6 and continue on Hatcher Pass Road where the road will take you to the Parks Highway at Willow.

 

FROM PALMER:

Travel north on the Glenn Highway to mile 49.6 - turn left (west) on Palmer-Fishhook Road until you get to mile 7.1.

From here if you want to go to the Southern Area where the Nordic and general hiking trails are located - turn left (west) on Edgerton Parks Road. FROM ANCHORAGE:

Drive north on Highway 1 (Glenn Highway) to Palmer about 40 miles. Continue past the Palmer-Wasilla Highway in Palmer for ~2 miles at mile 49.6 and turn left (west) on Palmer-Fishhook Road until you get to mile 7.1.

From here if you want to go to the Southern Area where the Nordic and general hiking trails are located - turn left (west) on Edgerton Parks Road. FROM WILLOW:

Drive east on Willow-Fishhook Road (Hatcher Pass Road) for 32 miles to the Independence Mine Historic Park, which will be just past Hatcher Pass summit. Be aware that this road is closed during the winter between miles 17.5 and 32.2. From Independence Mine Historic Park (Mile 17.5) you can proceed down the mountain to Mile 11 where the access road to where the sledding hill is and the proposed Alpine facility will be located. Continuing down the road to Mile 7.1 you reach the southern area where the Nordic and general hiking trails are located by turning right (west) on Edgerton Parks Road and travel 1 mile until you get to the access road that is not built yet (Ullr's Trail) and turn right (north). Drive one mile to the parking area. NOTE: The new road, Ullr's Trail, is not yet built. Construction is expected to begin in March 2012.
