Mat-Su residents have long understood that Government Peak at Hatcher Pass has the potential to be developed as a regional ski and recreation area. Residents are so hungry for snow sports here that over the past four decades they have devised any means possible to put someone on the mountain: be it snowboarders—hitchhiking in passing trucks to return to higher altitudes—or a private company escorting skiers mountainside on the back of a treaded snowcat.
Future Alpine Ski Area:
The Borough has completed a significant amount of infrastructure development inanticipation of developing the Alpine facility when funding is available or when a private or non-profit organization is interested in developing the Alpine facilities .
- Three phase electrical power has been extended into the proposed day lodge area
- A pioneer access road and parking area is located on the site. Design has been completed for the final road and parking area.
- Geotechnical work has been done on the day lodge and development sites
- A mountain design of ski lifts and ski runs has been completed
- A base area design to meet expected skier-days has been completed
- An Environmental Impact Statement for the planned facility has been completed
- Numerous economic analysis have been completed that establish base line data
- Sources of water for domestic and snow making have been identified and water rights permits have been obtained

The photo with ski lift overlay above shows what could be built in the future on the Alpine side of Government Peak. The demand for a downhill ski area is here. All winter, every weekend, Mat-Su parents send four tour busloads of children to the Alyeska Ski Resort.
