Access road to Nordic Ski closing for spring thaw |

MAT-SU—Warming temperatures and deteriorating road conditions are causing the closure of the access road to the new Government Peak Recreation Area. The road, Mountain Trails Drive, will be closed beginning tonight, April 2. The 7.5 km of Nordic ski trails are still in great shape. Alternate access to the trails will be via Edgerton Parks Road and Moose Lick Circle. Space is available for 15 cars.

MAT-SU—Some 150 trail enthusiasts turned out Dec. 28 to see what all the fun is about at the new cross-country ski trails at Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass. In the first race ever at the new nordic ski area, 24 teams signed up for a total of 72 racers. View the video and hear cowbells ring in the sweep of racers, including trail designer and former Olympic nordic skier Bill Spencer who says "trails make a community."

MAT-SU—Tomorrow, residents of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough celebrate a 30-year-old dream made tangible: the opening of a designed ski area at Hatcher Pass. A ribbon will be cut by many hands for 5 km of Nordic Ski trails, the beginning step for a network of Olympic class trails that may one day draw international ski events such as The World Cup.

MAT-SU—Over the last week, a feller buncher took down trees and an excavator cleared a path through deep snow, the beginnings of a one-mile road that leads to the future Government Peak Recreation Area at Hatcher Pass.

MAT-SU— Work begins in a few weeks on a road that leads to a long-anticipated Nordic Ski and recreation area at Hatcher Pass. Tonight (Feb. 21), the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly unanimously approved the contract for building a parking lot and an access road (Ullr’s Trail) to trails in the Government Peak Management Area.

Green light for Nordic trails & transit at Hatcher Pass |

MAT-SU—Recent final approval of an environmental document means that much-awaited trail clearing will begin soon on up to 10 kilometers of new Nordic ski trails on the southern side of Hatcher Pass in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough’s Nordic Ski Area. Skiers could be gliding on tracks by this November.

MAT-SU—Dive into winter this Saturday, Jan. 8, during the 7th Annual Winter Trails Day at Hatcher Pass. Free classes on skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding. Some gear is provided. Hot refreshments, a warming barrel, and laughter on the hill make for a memorable winter day. More than 230 people attended last year.
