Matanuska-Susitna Borough Finance Director Cheyenne Heindel and staff received recognition at a recent Assembly meeting for a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association for the 2019 budget. Mayor Vern Halter read from the award and honored Heindel's work. This is the fifth year the Borough has received the award.
"Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America," the GFOA news release states. The award assesses how well the budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. See the full GFOA news release here.
At a Feb. 19 Assembly meeting an overview of the audit of the 2018 budget was given by Joy Merriner with BDO. Here is a video link to her presentation on the CAFR, the Comprehensive Annual Financial Audit for fiscal year 2018. Click under Manager's report for the third item.
In the 2019 budget there's key helpful sections such as page 38-52, which summarize the budget, the process and a description of each fund. On the CAFR, there's a transmittal letter, beginning on page VII that explains the report and the economic condition of the Borough.
Another award received by Borough Finance for 31 years is the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
