Services & Rates
The Solid Waste Division is fully funded by rates and fees and does not collect any tax revenue to operate.
The Solid Waste Division rates are determined annually and usually take effect on July 1. Each year, services are analyzed regularly for cost efficiency and Best Management Practices. Rates are then recommended to the Borough Assembly for approval.
Solid Waste Staff takes pride in providing high quality service at the lowest possible costs. Many factors create the need for periodic rate increases. Some of these costs include managing 13 transfer sites, a landfill, Household Hazardous Waste collection, gas management systems, cell development and closure for waste disposal, and many other factors such as water analysis and safety improvements.
You can help keep costs down by recycling, using our reuse program and composting. Contact our Recycling Program Coordinator at 907-861-7605 to learn more.

No household waste will be deposited in the C&D cell. Anyone caught violating this EPA and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation regulated requirement is subject to fines.
Salvaging is acknowledged as one of the most dangerous processes in the waste management business. Due to the risk associated with salvaging, the MSB Solid Waste Division does not allow salvaging.

Brush, grass, and leaves may be brought to the Central Landfill for disposal and placed in the designated brush or grass or leaves area. Stumps are not accepted.
Brush may be brought to the Big Lake Transfer Station for disposal and placed in the designated brush area. Stumps, grass, and leaves are not accepted.

- 10,000 gallons of paint...
- 16,000 car batteries...
- and 24,000 gallons of used motor oil...
- ...end up in the landfill every year!
For ten years, the hazardous waste was diverted to a temporary holding place. On September 7, 2007, a new facility specifically dedicated to handling hazardous waste opened at the Central Landfill. The $1.7 million building was paid for by leftover grant money from the Dept. of Commerce and Economic Development and the Alaska Clean Water Loan program.
This facility ensures that residents can dispose of hazardous materials safety and economically, while making sure that these materials do not make their way into the landfill. The 6,000-square foot building also houses the administrative offices for the Solid Waste Division. Prior to the construction of this new facility, these offices had been housed in both a portable building and the Central Landfill scale house.
Do you have hazardous waste in your home you no longer want or need?
You can dispose of your household hazardous waste 7 days a week (with the exception of Holidays). Come to the main gate to dispose of antifreeze, paints, used oil, automotive batteries, pesticides, household cleaners, furniture strippers, adhesives, and other HHW items.
- Try to keep products in their original container.
- Label all containers.
- Identify unlabeled or unknown material to the best of your knowledge.
- Do not mix any products.
- Protect from tipping over during transport.
- No leaking containers are accepted.
- Keep away from passengers during transport.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, you can pick up and take home some of these recycled items free of charge through our Reuse program.
