The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Clerk's Office is responsible for planning and administering Borough elections. Regular elections are held annually on the first Tuesday in October. Special elections and mayoral run-off elections may be scheduled in accordance with Borough code.

    Election Day: Tuesday, October 7, 2014

    Candidate Filing Period Opens: Monday, July 21, 2014, at 8 a.m.

    Candidate Filing Period Closes: Friday, August 1, 2014, at 5 p.m.


    The Matanuska-Susitna Borough will hold a regular election on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The following offices are to be filled at the election:

    • Assembly District 4 (three-year term ending October 2017)
    • Assembly District 5 (three-year term ending October 2017)
    • School Board Seat D (three-year term ending October 2017)
    • School Board Seat E (three-year term ending October 2017)


    The candidate filing period opens at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014, and closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2014.

    Candidate Qualifications: Any person is eligible for Borough office if the person is a qualified voter of the Borough and meets State and Borough requirements for the office. Candidates for Assembly seats shall reside in the Borough and in the Assembly District for which they file and meet the requirements of
    MSB 2.12.030. Any Borough resident is eligible to run for a seat on the School Board. Candidates shall provide proof that they are eligible, or shall be eligible by the date of the election, to be recognized as a candidate for any election.

    Candidate Declarations: Declarations of candidacy and other candidate filing forms shall be filed during the candidate filing period, beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014, through 5 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2014, at the Borough Clerk's Office, located at 350 E. Dahlia Avenue, Palmer, Alaska.

    Candidate filing packets will be available for distribution on July 16, 2014.   • Notice of Voter Registration


    Election Day: Tuesday, Ocober 7, 2014

    Voter Registration Deadline: 
    Sunday, September 7, 2014. 


    You must be registered to vote at least 30 calendar days prior to any election or your vote in that election will not be counted. The deadline for registering to vote in the October 7, 2014, regular election is Sunday, September 7, 2014.

     

    MSB 25.10.005 Voter Qualification.

    (A)  A person may vote in a borough election only if the person:

          (1) is qualified to vote in state elections under AS 15.05.010;

          (2) has been a resident of the borough for 30 days immediately preceding the election;

          (3) is registered to vote in state elections at a residence address within the borough at least 30 days before the borough election at which the person seeks to vote; and

          (4) is not disqualified under Article V of the state constitution.

     

    If you need to register to vote or update your voter registration record, you must complete a Voter Registration Application. You may complete an application online or you may print an application.

    Voter registration applications are available at any State Division of Elections office, State Division of Motor Vehicles, or through a voter registration agency to include the Borough Clerk's Office or the municipal Clerk's Office in the cities of Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla.

    There are several ways for Borough residents to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election. Click the headlines below to learn more or call the Borough Clerk's Office at 907-861-8683.

    Electioneering Prohibited. During the hours the polls are open, no person who is in the polling place or within 200 feet of any entrance of the polling place may attempt to persuade a person to vote for or against a candidate, proposition, or question, nor may any person conduct other political activities that may pertain to any future election or potential ballot proposition.

    Absentee By-Mail Voting

    Election Day: Tuesday, October 7, 2014

    Registered voters of the Borough may apply annually to have a ballot mailed to them. A ballot and voting instructions will be mailed approximately two weeks prior to the election. If you wish to vote by mail in the October 7, 2014, regular election, your application must be received in the Borough Clerk's Office, no later than Tuesday, September 30, 2014.

    Absentee In-Person Voting

    Election Day: Tuesday, October 7, 2014

    Residents of the Borough may vote at any of the following absentee voting locations. The hours of operation vary at each location.

    Alaska State Division of Elections - Mat-Su Office

    1700 E. Bogard Rd. (North Fork Professional Bldg. B, Suite 102), Wasilla, Alaska
    September 22, 2014 - October 6, 2014
    Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Sunday - Closed 
    All ballot types are available at this location during the entire voting period except that the cities of Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla end city voting at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 6.

    All ballot types are available at this location during the entire voting period except that the cities of Houston, Palmer, and Wasilla end city voting at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 6.

    Absentee In-Person voting will also take place September 22 through October 6, 2014, during business hours at Houston City Hall and the Talkeetna and Trapper Creek Public Libraries. Ballot types are limited and specific to the community in which the ballot is cast.

    Regular and Questioned Voting

    Election Day: Tuesday, October 7, 2014

    Regular Voting. Borough residents are encouraged to vote at their designated polling location when voting on Election Day. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. To find your polling location visit the Alaska State Division of Elections online or contact the Borough Clerk's Office at 907-861-8683 or the Alaska State Division of Elections Office at 1-888-383-8683 (toll free).

    Questioned Voting. If your name does not appear on the precinct register, you do not have  identification, you choose to vote outside of your precinct on Election Day, or your qualifications to vote have been questioned, you must vote a questioned ballot. Before receiving a ballot you must complete a questioned ballot envelope. The information provided on the ballot envelope will be used to determine your voting eligibility and to update your voter registration record with the Alaska State Division of Elections. If for any reason your questioned ballot is not counted, you will be notified in writing.

    Special Needs Voting

    Election Day: Tuesday, October 7, 2014

    Special Needs Voting by Personal Representative is available to any voter who cannot vote in person due to age, illness, or disability. Please contact the Borough Clerk's Office at 907-861-8683, for more information.

     

  • Election Officials Wanted

    Election Day - Tuesday, October 7, 2014

    The Borough Clerk's Office is looking for individuals to serve as election officials. It literally takes hundreds of election officials to conduct an election. Election officials are an important part of the election process and are responsible for carrying out duties under the direction and supervision of the Borough Clerk. Training and compensation are provided.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    • Must be a registered voter of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
    • Must be available to work on Election Day from 6:30 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m.
    • Must be available to work for a few hours on the day before the election to set up the precinct for voting, if needed.
    • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
    • Must be available to attend a mandatory training session for approximately 2.5 hours approximately one week prior to the commencement of voting.
    • Must have transportation to the polling place.
    • Must take an oath that you will honestly, faithfully, and promptly perform the duties of election official, according to law, and you will diligently endeavor to prevent the violation of any provision of law in conducting the election, and if you provide assistance to a voter, you will not divulge how the voter cast his or her ballot.
    • Must be dedicated, cooperative, and professional.
    GENERAL DUTIES
    • Prepare, open, and close the polling location.
    • Find voter information on the voter register.
    • Issue and accept official ballots.
    • Assist voters in any phase of the voting process.
