Public Works leads by example in exceeding community needs by being helpful and professional through competent management of the Borough's infrastructure and related support services. With excellence in service; we are setting the standard in every regard! Responsibilities of the Public Works Department include:

  • Manage and inspect construction projects
  • Inspect subdivision road construction
  • Design and obtain public rights-of-way
  • Road maintenance
  • Perform operations and maintenance for Borough buildings and vehicles
  • Provide custodial services for the DSJ Administration Building
  • Manage Central Landfill and the Transfer Sites (Solid Waste Division)
  • Manage the Talkeetna Water and Sewer Public Utility.

Operations and Maintenance

The Operations and Maintenance (O & M) Division manages road improvement projects, natural resource projects, and community projects. We provide maintenance of:

  • Roads
  • Facilities
  • Utilities
  • Vehicles (excluding Emergency Services vehicles)

Solid Waste Division

The Solid Waste Division receives and manages waste generated within the Borough. In order to fulfill the requirements generated by the borough, the Division is organized into five management units:

  • Solid Waste Division Administration
  • Central Landfill and Maintenance Operations
  • Transfer Station Operations
  • Environmental Operations and
  • Recycling, Community Clean Up and Junk Car Removal Operations

Services include the identification and breakdown of waste receipt as follows:

  • Household waste disposal
  • Construction and demolition debris disposal
  • Hazardous waste classification disposition
  • Asbestos acceptance
  • Recycling
  • Community clean up coordination
  • Right of way clean up coordination
  • Abandoned vehicle removal services

The Solid Waste Division staff welcomes ideas and feedback on solid waste and recycling. The Division supported the start-up of community recycling efforts at several transfer sites.
